CaMSIGN was honoured and pleased to welcome back Dr. Oliver Ayling (PGY-6) and Dr. Michael Rizzuto (PGY-3) at UBC Neurosurgery in co-leading the third episode of CaMSIGN’s “UBC Neurosurgery Case of the Month” series. The third episode focused on neurosurgical oncology. Each case concluded with some key pearls that were valuable in preparation for neurosurgical electives as well as other surgical electives.

This was our second session from a new monthly collaboration with UBC Neurosurgery. As an expansion to our “Medical Student Hot Seat Series”, UBC Neurosurgery Residents, Dr. Oliver Ayling (PGY-6) and Dr. Michael Rizzuto (PGY-3), co-led a series of live episodes focused on clinical teachings related to a variety of cases within different subspecialties of neurosurgery.
Cases were delivered as Correlative Rounds with relevant imaging, pathology, H&P & more followed by general teaching around the topic. The second episode focused on core concepts in spine surgery. Medical students were encouraged to ask questions and participate as a group as the cases are great opportunities to build on clinical reasoning and understanding. Each case concluded with some key pearls.

About Dr. Ayling:
Dr. Ayling is a PGY-6 Neurosurgery Resident at the University of British Columbia. He earned his BA (Psychology) from the University of Victoria and MSc (Neuroscience) from the University of British Columbia prior to receiving his MD from the University of Toronto. During medical school, Oliver received the Weber Nimon prize in neurology. In his free time, he enjoys hiking, cycling, skiing, and traveling.
About Dr. Rizzuto:
Dr. Rizzuto is a PGY-3 Neurosurgery Resident at the University of British Columbia. He earned his MD from the University of British Columbia after completing a BSc. (Hons) in Kinesiology at McMaster University. He currently acts as the program representative for Neurosurgery to the Resident Doctors of BC as well as the Secretary for the Canadian Neurosurgery Research Collaborative (CNRC). Outside of the hospital he enjoys playing soccer, exploring beautiful BC and the rare trip to the couch for some video games.
